Charmoli Ciarmoli is thrilled to present an eclectic selection of international artists in the group exhibition A Private Viewing. Conceptual, interactive, educational and ceremonial in nature, our first and last group exhibition of this particular venue encapsulates the essence of Charmoli Ciarmoli’s inaugural Park Avenue space. Like New York City itself, we strive to be a place where everyone, regardless of cultural origin and identity, is welcome to exist and prosper. Presenting artists with varied backgrounds: from the Ivy League to the Self-Taught, from the previously exhibited to the first ever showing. A Private Viewing explores the act of by appointment only viewings of an artwork, offering a commentary on the commodification of art as luxury goods within a commercial entity currently located in a corporate office building.

Most of the public is familiar with the white cube or museum exhibition. Only the invited few enter into the “back rooms” for intimate sessions to engage with works of their choosing. What is this process and procession like to view and experience an artist’s work on these such premeditated terms? For the well seasoned collector, a ceremonial ritual of discernment? For the burgeoning collector, an enigmatic delight?

What compels one to initiate a viewing in the first place? Commonly practiced for the purpose of separating the work from its public context, the inquiring collector is able to reframe the work according to their values and collection. Taking a brief moment to reflect on why things are how they are and what exactly are we doing might serve us all considering the current state of the world.

Lastly, the viewer plays a vital role of co-curator in this exhibition. For they are the ones who select what works they want to be intimate with for the duration of the appointment. Individual choice being a key to art itself. There are a number of steps taken to viewing a work. An email must be written to inquire on our list of works, an artist selected, a booking placed in the schedule. Once the viewer/viewers arrive to their private viewing, being the commercial entity that we are, they ought to ask themselves why they are there and what has brought them to this moment. Have they discovered or sustained themselves on the ideas, techniques, emotions and vision that the artist has materialized from inside themselves and the world around them? And will they then reciprocate the gesture to the ones who provided that instance by acquiring the selected work to live on with them beyond that singular moment for generations to come. Only by appointment the viewer may have the privilege to select and engage with a singular artist’s works in our private viewing space.
